Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
Hi. My name is Mrs. Sanders, and I am your child’s math teacher. I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to let you know that I am pleased and excited to have your child in math class.
I am providing you with the information in this handbook so that you will be aware of the class expectations and know how your child can be successful in math class.
Please keep this handbook for your reference. Although I am going over this information in class, discussing it with your child will be a meaningful way to increase understanding.
Please Return the Attached Slip To let me know that you received a copy of this handbook, please complete, detach, and return the parent and student signature slip at the end of this handbook. The slip is detailed because it forms the basis of your contact information in my files. Students who return a complete and signed slip in a timely fashion will receive one class participation grade of a 100 in the grade book to be averaged in with his or her other class participation grades.
Purpose of Math and Math Class Math is largely about “assigning order and value to the universe. We tend to assign value in three ways: numbers, space, and/or time” (Mental Models for Math, Grades 6-12 p. xi). People who cannot do math are at a disadvantage. On the other hand, people who can do math have much to offer themselves and their family members (present and future!) and others (e.g. potential employers or oneself if self-employed!). So becoming better and better at math is a really good thing!
In math class, your child will . . . 1) study, do, and practice math in order to 2) maintain and improve number sense and 3) acquire an understanding of math VOCABULARY, CONCEPTS, ALGORITHMS, |
